Christmas Party 2024 and beyond!

The Leicester City of Sanctuary Christmas Party

One of the things we do every year is to run a small Christmas celebration for our service users. Well, two actually – we have one for the adults, and one for the families, which is very similar, but there’s just more bits of craft paper to pick up off the floor at the end of the day for us after everyone has gone home.

Obviously, the idea of Christmas isn’t a universal concept, but we’ve discovered that almost everyone loves pizza, so it’s a good excuse to get as many people together as possible and to pass out some gifts that make life a little bit easier. What was even better was that this year we had some very generous donations of toys, toiletries and warm clothing from the following groups,  because they were very appropriate for our service users, and made their day. The groups were: –

  • Giving World
  • St. John’s Church
  • English Martyrs School (Year 8! thanks!)
  • Amy and her colleagues at the Leicester Royal Infirmary
  • Rhona and friends

… and to the right here, we have a picture of Maggie packing them all into bags. Omid and I were there as well, of course. Somebody had to hold the camera whilst Maggie did all the hard work, as she always does.

Thanks Maggie!

So all in all, the event was a huge success with games, music, balloon modelling, pizza and enough bits of paper all over the floor that I can guarantee that everyone had a good time, led through it all by our team of super-volunteers without whom none of this would have been possible.

We’re all looking forward to what the next year will bring for Leicester City of Sanctuary – more regular updates to the blog page, I promise! So, from all of us here, I hope you had a lovely, restful break over the last few weeks and are ready to step forward into the future with us, welcoming all of the Asylum Seekers and Refugees that come to Leicester into our wonderful community.
